CARE & MAINTENANCE

Mulching your perennial bed will help maintain adequate water levels and will help to control weeds. Because deep cultivation may injure roots of desirable plants, hand weeding or carefully using an herbicide is recommended.

Perennials need adequate fertilization. Use a well-balanced fertilizer in the spring and once or twice more during the growing season.

Some perennials are top heavy and require staking. Most of the time the plants grow full enough to hide the support. If you use ties of any type, make sure they do not girdle the plant stem.

Dead-heading (the removal of dead flowers) during the growing season will maintain vigorous growth and promote additional flowering. Remove dead foliage and stems in the fall to make room for new growth in the spring.
